Psychiatrist
I attended medical school in Santiago de Cuba. I began my studies at the ISCM in my city in 1984 and graduated in 1990. Immediately after graduation, I started my residency training in Urology, which I completed in 1993.
In August 1994, I left my country and went to Guantanamo Bay as a refugee, where I spent 8 months in both Guantanamo and a safe haven in Panama.
In May 1995, I arrived in the USA and moved to Philadelphia. During this time, I started learning English while also preparing to take the medical board exams, all while working as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor in both outpatient and residential settings. By 1998, I began applying for residency programs.
In 1999, I was accepted into a psychiatry residency program at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, which is affiliated with Cornell University. I started there in July 2000.
After two years in this program, I transferred to St. Luke’s Roosevelt in Manhattan, affiliated with Columbia University.
It was at St. Luke’s Roosevelt that I discovered my passion for geropsychiatry, and I pursued an elective rotation in that area for six months. After completing my residency, I moved back to Philadelphia, where my family lives, and began working at Girard Medical Center in a combined role that included outpatient psychiatry and both residential and outpatient methadone maintenance.
I continued working there while also taking on part-time positions at Comhar and Pan American Mental Health Outpatient. In 2007, I started working at HCCS, and in 2009, I began at APM. Since then, I have been focusing on outpatient psychiatry.
In my personal life, I enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends. I love learning languages, going to the beach, and being outdoors in general. I also have a passion for animals and gardening. I consider myself a loyal friend and have a strong ability to empathize with others.
